PROVIDING "CHILD-LIFE SERVICE" AT THE...

...CHILDREN'S NEW CLINIC

In March 2012 the office of psycho-social assistance for hospitalized children was established in the “Children’s New Clinic” in Tbilisi to improve the medical assistance for hospitalized children and their parentsThis project was financed by "Aktion Mensch" with the support of the ASB Germany.

A psychologist with international experience provides a 6-8 hours service per week for the patients and their parents in the centre. In pediatric institutions the psycho-social cabinet is one of the most important components of a multidiscipline approach in medical service. The main objective of this service is the reduction and prevention of stress which is related to a concrete medical service and health problems.
Such services are practically non-existent in Georgia. So that the young patients of pediatric clinics, who need long-term hospitalization, and their families have to deal with the high stress they are going through totally by themselves. In combination with the child's health conditions and posibble psycho-social problems, in our opinion, this is an unacceptable state for the child and its family.

The development of the psycho-social service in the “Children’s New Clinic” will give the opportunity to:

• Care for the welfare of hospitalized children and their families in the clinic;
• Reduce the cases of stress related to medical services, health conditions and the potential prevention of  trauma;
• Provide optimal conditions for the children to develop;
• Support the development of a child - and family also medical service oriented.

The psycho-social service is a systematic and integrated approach of developing therapy games, which, through taking into account to the child’s age and individual characteristics, provides the following:

•  Explanation of diagnosis;
•  Preparation for medical procedures;
•  Support during procedures;
•  Playful therapy;
•  Emotional support;
•  Normalization/ regulation of the environment
                    a) through games that are important for a child’s development and his/her adaptation to the hospital environment, and
                    b) through relevant toys and age-appropriate games;
•  Elaboration of a balanced program, which will envisage the age of the patient, development, health condition and physical possibilities;
•  Creation of a child-oriented environment.

The psychologists’ group is reaching about 100 children monthly. The students of Ilia University and German volunteers also participate by supporting and looking after the children in the new playroom that was established in the hospital during the project process.

...EMERGENCY ROOM

In October 2017 the SSK planned to improve the psycho-social service at the “Children’s New Clinic” by establishing a psycho-social assistance also at the ER (Emergency room) and by turning the ER more into a child-friendly area by adding some play items like sensoric walls, toys and childrens furniture.

The whole project was financed and supported through the cooperation with the ASB Austria.

This project focussed on two target groups. The first were gratuated students in psychology from the Ilia State  and Caucasian University. After an application procedure, twenty students joined an extra training in psycho-social service for children to achieve the status of "Child Life Specialists". In the end four specialits were choosen for a permanent position at the clinic to provide daily Child Life Service at the ER.
Therefore the the second target group were the young patients, to support them by our new specialists from the beginning they arrive at the hospital through their whole hospitalization. And in addition to that also the parents and families and even the medical staff benefits from the daily attendance of our Chid Life service.

Before we started this project we already cooperated closely with the clinic at itself and its coordination department  „EVEX Medical Corporation“, to talk about sustainable opportunities after the project will end. Both, the clinic and EVEX were taken with taking over and to continue the Child Life Service and to promote the service as a role model for other clinics. Since the end of 2018 our psychologists are officially employed by the clinic as itself.

We are very happy and thankful that our project turned into an inherent part of the clinic so that the psycho-social service for the small patients is guaranteed.
